Izvor Pende’s world is disquieting and captivating in equal measure. This artist seems to have at his command an endless sea of amorphous and partly geometrical shapes.
His large coloured surfaces spill over with linear elements and blurred or sharply defined borders. Waves as grey surfaces, grey surfaces as tears. An effective organism of colours and shapes that signifies an original spatial quality, sometimes raw and almost invasive, sometimes delicate and distanced.

The artist’s everyday environment is undeniably present in the current series of paintings, active in their DNA. Izvor’s world lures me in the form of suggestions, signs and mysteries: industrial or natural elements, urban or coastal settings, symbolic figures; so many familiar moments employed to establish a relationship with the world. It seems to me that in certain places, in the curve or the volume, I fleetingly recognise things known, something I’ve encountered in the past: window, door, veranda, seat, leg of furniture. Elsewhere a partially geometrical shape catches my eye: an isolated angle, an irregular triangle, contrasting strips, rare lines that are straight. Or not? My gaze is/isn’t disillusioned: a reality is not identifiable.

Izvor’s world entices me also by the percussion of stratified levels. Overall there is an imposing foreground, which saturates the primary space. Subsequently secondary levels appear and further wave fields, where a depth opens up to me that I had never before sensed and which I am discovering, as it were, by chance. Perspective is seldom obvious here. Sometimes my head spins and I cannot decide where to look and where my gaze should soonest rest. I perceive movement. Everything looks frozen, colours are sometimes warm and fiery, at other times chilly and dark. I pass through extensive neutral zones; the totality is neither hot nor cold, it’s diffusing. Equilibrium, a powerful gravitation. This universe is multidimensional, it breaks free of linear and binary logic. Frequently a kind of vertigo strikes me, I confront the uncertainty of planes, surfaces and volumes, densely criss-crossing in certain places while almost evaporating in others.

Each painting with its specific series of lines, colours and organised shapes resonates with my perception of musical as well as visual composition. The work pulses with a definite rhythm, it lays out a singular score made of vibrations, throbs, and zones of silence. A sea. It seems, then, that Pende’s paintings are influenced by many sensual stimuli and his work reflects something like a synaesthetic perception of reality: I find there visual echoes of waves and lightning-bolts of memories.

Izvor Pende was born in Zagreb, Croatia.
He began studying sculpture in 1996 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Pende then moved to study painting at Kunstakademie Dusseldorf, receiving his degree in 2002 (Professors Karin Rissa and Markus Lupertz) and his masters degree in 2005. Since 2003, Pende has exhibited his artworks in solo and group exhibitions in Bonn, Munich, Hannover, Dusseldorf and Hamburg in Germany, Chicago in USA, and Eupen, Belgium. In 2005 he won the Ikob – Kunstpreis Nomination and in 2008 the BAT (British American Tobacco) award. The artistic dialogue with German painter Daniel Richter began in the project “Swimming Together”, where two painters showcased their paintings side-by-side in several museums and institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Split in 2017, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka in 2018. In 2019 Izvor Pende presented his solo exhibition Golden Hours at David Richard Gallery in New York, and in the same year Pende participated in the exhibition Point of Interrupted Departures, together with artists Marijana Pende and Slaven Tolj, which was held during the 58th Venice Biennale in the Pavilion Tesa 100 in the Arsenale, In 2022, he had a solo exhibition at National Museum of Modern Art, Zagreb. Izvor Pende’s artworks are in several museums and in various private collections.

Svet Izvora Pendeho je rovnako znepokojujúci ako podmanivý. Autor akoby čerpal z nekonečného mora amorfných a čiastočne geometrických tvarov. V jeho tvorbe sa veľké farebné plochy prelievajú s lineárnymi prvkami neostrých či výrazných okrajov. Vlny ako sivé plochy, sivé plochy ako slzy. Pôsobivý organizmus farieb a tvarov, ktorý naznačuje originálnu priestorovosť, niekedy surovú a takmer invazívnu, niekedy jemnú a vzdialenú.

Aktuálna séria obrazov má vo svojej DNA nepopierateľný vplyv autorovho každodenného prostredia. Izvorov svet ku mne prehovára vo forme indícií, znakov či záhad: industriálne alebo prírodné prvky, mestské alebo prímorské prostredie, symbolické postavy; toľko známych momentov využívaných na nadviazanie vzťahu so svetom. Zdá sa mi, že na niekoľkých miestach letmo rozpoznávam v krivke alebo v objeme známy prvok, s ktorým som sa stretla v minulosti: okienko, dvere, veranda, sedadlo, noha nábytku. Inde moje oko upúta čiastkovo geometrický tvar: izolovaný uhol, nepravidelný trojuholník, kontrastné pruhy, vzácne rovné línie. Alebo nie? Môj pohľad je/nie je klamaný: skutočnosť nie je identifikovateľná.

Izvorov svet ku mne prehovára aj perkusiou vrstvenia rovín: celkovo impozantné popredie, ktoré nasýti prvý priestor. Následne sa objavia sekundárne roviny a ďalšie polia vĺn, kde sa mi otvára hĺbka, o ktorej som ani netušila a ktorú objavujem akoby náhodou. Perspektíva je tu zriedkakedy zrejmá. Niekedy sa mi točí hlava, neviem sa rozhodnúť, kam sa pozerať a kde má môj pohľad spočinúť skôr. Vnímam pohyb. Všetko sa mi zdá zamrznuté, farby sú niekedy teplé, ohnivé, inokedy studené a tmavé. Prechádzam veľkými neutrálnymi zónami, celok nie je horúci ani studený, ale rozplýva sa. Rovnováha, silná gravitácia. Tento vesmír je multidimenzionálny, uniká lineárnej a binárnej logike. Pravidelne ma prepadne určité vertigo, čelím neistote plánov, plôch a objemov, ich hustému prelínaniu na niektorých miestach, alebo takmer vyprchávaniu na iných.

Každý obraz so svojimi špecifickými sériami línií, farieb a organizovaných tvarov rezonuje s mojím vnímaním vizuálnej, ale aj hudobnej kompozície. Dielo pulzuje určitým rytmom, rozmiestňuje singulárnu partitúru, tvorenú vibráciami, tlkotmi a zónami ticha. More. Zdá sa teda, že maľby Izvora Pendeho sú ovplyvnené mnohými zmyslovými podnetmi, jeho maľba akoby odrážala synestetické vnímanie reality: nachádzam v ňom vizuálne ozveny vĺn a záblesky spomienok.

Izvor Pende sa narodil v Záhrebe v Chorvátsku.
Pende študoval maľbu na Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, kde získal titul v roku 2002 (profesori Karin Rissa a Markus Lupertz) a magisterský titul v roku 2005. Od roku 2003 Pende vystavuje svoje diela na samostatných a skupinových výstavách v Európe a USA. V roku 2005 vyhral nomináciu Ikob – Kunstpreis a v roku 2008 cenu BAT (British American Tobacco). Umelecký dialóg s nemeckým maliarom Danielom Richterom sa začal v projekte „Swimming Together“, kde dvaja maliari vystavovali spoločne v niekoľkých múzeách a inštitúciách, vrátane Múzea výtvarného umenia v Splite v roku 2017, Múzea súčasného umenia v Zagrebe a Múzea moderného a súčasného umenia v Rijeke v roku 2018. V roku 2019 Izvor Pende predstavil svoju samostatnú výstavu Golden Hours v David Richard Gallery v New Yorku a v tom istom roku sa Pende zúčastnil výstavy Point of Interrupted Departtures spolu s umelcami Marijana Pende a Slaven Tolj, ktorá sa konala počas 58. Benátskeho bienále v pavilóne Tesa 100 v Arsenale. V roku 2022 mal samostatnú výstavu v Národnom múzeu moderného umenia v Záhrebe. Umelecké diela Izvora Pendeho sú zastúpené vo viacerých európskych múzeách a v rôznych súkromných zbierkach.
