Since we were born, we have been full of outer and inner obstacles, framing our lives in the most peculiar ways. Some of us stumble, some of us can use these blockages, even traumas growing as a better and stronger version of ourselves. The solo show of Nikolett Balázs tells a story about these processes through her sensual textile and wire based sculptures aiming for a deeper understanding of freedom and our own role in it.
First part of the exhibition space introduces the raw materials hanging there like in a workroom, waiting to start their journey. The main space has the sculpture in the middle, representing an ongoing process where the raw textile and wire starts to merge into one. On the walls painted, more constructed, finished pieces exhibited as different outcomes of the process.

Nikolett Balázs forms part of the youngest generation of the Hungarian art scene and mainly works with the iconic material of 20th century female artists, the raw jute canvas used by Ilona Keserü or Marina Abakanowicz. The examination of our existence and reinterpretation of our consciousness of reality is the main task of Balázs’s activity through her vivid installations.The rippling folds, which open and close like flowers, intertwine many layers of meaning beyond the feminist vulva symbolism to the totemic individuality on flayed skin. The way Nikolett recycles and mixes her materials evokes her Eastern-Hungarian rural milieu, putting special emphasis on the people living in the periphery. Her artworks go all the way down to the roots, into the deep, embedded in the story of our own age and personal mythologies.

Nikolett Balázs (b. 1990) is a Budapest based artist who graduated from the Painting Department from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2015. She was nominated for Leopold Bloom Art Award and Esterházy Art Award in 2021. Balázs is a member of MŰTŐ artist run collective since 2016 and internationally active artist. She is the winner of the Secondary Archive competition from the Hungarian young art scene section. Her works can be found also in public (MNB Hungarian National Bank, MODEM Modern and Contemporary Arts Centre) and private collections (Irokéz Collection, Dávid Kováts). She was recently selected to take part in Manifesta 14 Prishtina and VISEGRAD FUND Residency Programme in New York. Nikolett is the first hungarian artist to exhibit at Saco Biennial Chile, 2023.

Už od narodenia sme plní najrozličnejších vonkajších a vnútorných prekážok, ktoré naše životy tvarujú mnohými neraz zvláštnymi spôsobmi. Niektorí z nás zakopnú, iní tieto prekážky, či dokonca rastúce traumy, pretavia pri formovaní seba samých do lepšej, silnejšej podoby. Sólová show Nikolett Balázs je rozprávaním príbehu o týchto procesoch. Darí sa jej to tvorbou zmyslových sôch z textilu a drôtu, ktoré majú viesť k hlbšiemu porozumeniu slobody a toho, aká je v nej naša vlastná úloha.
V prvej časti výstavného priestoru autorka predstavuje surový materiál, ktorý tam visí ako v dielni, a ešte len čaká na začiatok svojej cesty. Hlavnému priestoru dominuje socha uprostred, predstavujúca prebiehajúci proces, v ktorom sa surový textil a drôt začínajú spájať v jedno. Na stenách sú umiestnené maľované, úplnejšie, finálne diela vystavené ako jednotlivé rôzne výsledky procesu.

Nikolett Balázs patrí k mladšej generácii maďarskej umeleckej scény a zväčša pracuje s kultovým materiálom ženských umelkýň 20. storočia, surovým jutovým plátnom, aké používali Ilona Keserü či Marina Abakanowicz. Hlavným zmyslom živých inštalácií Nikolett Balázs je skúmať naše bytie a nanovo interpretovať naše vnímanie reality. Zvlnené záhyby, ktoré sa otvárajú a zatvárajú ako kvety, v sebe vzájomne prepletajú mnohé významové vrstvy, ktoré presahujú feministickú symboliku vulvy či totemickú individualitu stiahnutej kože. Spôsob, ako Nikolett recykluje a kombinuje materiál, evokuje jej vidiecke prostredie východného Maďarska, pričom osobitý dôraz kladie na ľudí žijúcich na periférii. Jej umelecké diela prenikajú až ku koreňom, do hĺbky, sú zapustené do príbehu našej doby a osobných mytológií.
